Get Healthy Without Breaking A Sweat

Exercise your…brain?

While many people have never heard of brainwave entrainment, it is a field of study that has over 75 years under its belt.

In 1929 scientist Hans Berger discovered the Alpha brainwave. Not long after, researchers figured out that brainwaves could be strengthened using flickering lights. They called it Photic Driving.

By 1942 scientists had discovered that repetitive stimulation could produce brainwave entrainment and by 1959 audio entrainment had been discovered in addition to flickering light.

In the ‘60s and ‘70s science began using brainwave entrainment as a tool to reduce the amount of anesthesia needed for surgery and for dental procedures. They also began to use entrainment as a way to treat different neurological conditions.

By the ‘80s studies used brainwave entrainment to relieve headaches, increase serotonin and HGH production, and for relaxation and super learning. By the ‘90s research had also been conducted around the benefits of brainwave entrainment for PMS, fatigue, depression, high blood pressure and more.

Despite this long history, the average person has no idea what brainwave entrainment is and what it can do for them.

Music is Healing

It seems almost illogical that music, tones and lights could change the brain in so many positive ways, but we’ve all experienced brainwave entrainment and probably never realized it.

Your brain is always busy. Brainwaves occur when a group of neurons sends a message to another group of neurons. It produces an electrical pulse which creates a wavelike pattern based on how many speed cycles per second (Hz). If you’re awake and alert the waves are faster. If you’re meditating, relaxed or asleep the waves are slower. These waves change based on what you’re doing and how you’re feeling.

If you’ve ever been lulled into a state of calm when staring into a campfire or felt instantly energized when your favorite song comes on, you’ve experienced brainwave entrainment.

Brainwave entrainment is anything that causes your brainwaves to synchronize with a stimulus whether it’s sound, vibration or light.

When you’re intentionally using brainwave entrainment, you’re training your brainwaves to an intended state to achieve a result such as improved sleep, relaxation, or energy. Many people use brainwave entrainment when meditating to increase their results.

Brainwave States:

  • Beta: At 13-38Hz, Beta brainwaves are small, fast brainwaves that are associated with being awake, alert and in a state of focus.

  • Alpha: Alpha brainwaves range from 8-12Hz. They are slow, large brainwave patterns. They are associated with relaxation and your intuitive and creative state of mind.

  • Theta: Somewhere between sleep and awake lies your Theta brainwaves. At 4-7Hz, theta is your relaxed, healing and super learning state.

  • Delta: Delta is the slowest brainwave state at 1-3Hz. This is your deep sleep, rest and recovery state.

  • Gamma: Gamma operates at 39-42Hz. They are the fastest brainwaves. When you are in Gamma you are in a peak concentration state.

We spend a good portion of our lives in the Beta brainwave state, which is where stress occurs and where our bodies build up toxic levels of stress hormones. That doesn’t mean beta is bad. Beta is also the state where we work, are alert, and get things done, but learning to balance those brainwaves is important to our brain and body health, and what ultimately helps us better handle the stress around us.

How does it work?

Brainwave entrainment is used to encourage the brain to enter specific desired states using pulsing lights and sound. The pulses cause what’s called frequency following response, which encourages the brain to align to the desired brainwave frequencies such as those shown above.

The audio frequencies used to train the brain are called binaural beats. These beats cause the brain to match the frequency of the beats, much in the same way our bodies match the beat of a song with a subconscious head bob or tapping foot.

When two different tones, separated in frequency by only a few Hertz, are introduced — one in each ear — the brain perceives a third, unique tone – the binaural beat. Binaural beats work by creating this phantom frequency, which the brain then mimics. For example, if we play a 220 Hz carrier tone into the left ear and a 226.5 Hz carrier tone into the right ear, your brain perceives the difference between the two, which is a subtle beat frequency of 6.5 Hz, which is Theta, the same frequency associated with deep, meditative states. Your brain naturally follows this frequency and creates relaxation for you. These frequencies are the same ones produced when you meditate. In other words, it helps the brain do what it does naturally anyway in an easier and faster way.

How does balancing your brainwaves benefit you?

Most of us are operating in a state of Beta most of the time, so retraining our brains and bodies to take a break, relax, and recover is key to lasting health.

In the same way exercise strengthens your body, brain entrainment exercises your mind and allows it to operate at peak performance. When our brain stays out of balance for too long, we can experience:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Addiction

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Lack of sleep

  • Lack of focus and concentration

TOO MUCH

NOT ENOUGH

BALANCED BRAINWAVES

DELTA: Learning difficulties, difficulty thinking, ADHD

Sleeping difficulties, brain unable to go through detox cycle

Boosted immune system, better sleep patterns, boosted healing

THETA: ADHD, Depression, Hyperactivity, Impulse control, Attention issues

Anxiety, low emotional IQ, stress related disorders

More creative, emotionally connected, intuitive, relaxed

ALPHA: Inattention, difficulties with focus, lack of alertness

Anxiety, high stress, insomnia, obsessive compulsive disorders

Better regulation of relaxation and alertness when appropriate

BETA: High anxiety, high arousal, high stress

Depression, poor cognition, attention issues

More focused, improved memory, better problem solving

Brainwave Entrainment Done For You…

Everyone can benefit from brainwave entrainment. That’s why Dr. Porter created BrainTap with the mission of bettering a billion brains. Dr. Porter began his journey into brain health when he was 12. His father taught him and his siblings relaxation techniques to assist him in school and sports. He took that knowledge and began studying brainwave entrainment and its uses over 25 years ago. In the ‘80s he was part of the development of the first ever light and sound device for brainwave entrainment and his goal ever since has been to develop products the average person can use at home to achieve the goal of better brain health and whole body wellness.

BrainTap’s audio sessions combine unique audio frequencies and beats (remember the binaural beats from above?) with precise light pulses to create a complete experience for your brain.

When you add the BrainTap into your daily routine, you are creating a symphony of balanced brainwaves. Similar to meditation, BrainTap naturally guides your brain through a broad spectrum of brainwave patterns to give you a completely balanced brain with no effort on your part. It’s easy to balance your brainwaves with BrainTap!
